I don’t know Audacity, so you’ll have to judge it yourself. The standard for the NPR set is Pro Tools, but I get by perfectly well with Logic. On the other hand, if you want to do anything with interesting sound design, stick with a DAW built for music. The bells and whistles are simplified in Hindenburg because you don’t need anything complicated. It is a freaking dream to edit your tracks compared to music DAWs like Logic and I suspect Audacity. Hindenburg is designed for that type of story, and it’s amazingly easy to put together your story once you have your script and vocals recorded. Think of a four minute story heard on NPR. A straightforward “acts and tracks” piece (actualities or interviews/field sounds and tracked vocals for narration). By really simple, I mean recording your interviews and narration into a field recorder and then add pre-produced music or other sounds in the edit. If you’re doing a relatively simple piece, Hindenburg is awesome. I started out producing in Logic Pro X, and then used Hindenburg at the Transom Traveling Workshop. I'm thinking that if I have Hindenburg I could theoretically cut out the engineer, save some $$$ in the long term, and use the built in plugins (maybe buy something like RX) and produce the whole thing myself. Usually I don't have a ton of audio issues. For instance, I see that Hindenburg has easy fade in/out keys, but when you're doing a straight up interview, what is the purpose of fading in and out? I tried it out Hindenburg Journalist (using their free trial) and thought it was nice, but nothing groundbreaking. Right now I use Audacity + Zencastr to record remote guests, and edit in Audacity. I've been interested in it because it seems to be built specifically for radio / podcast editing. I've been told that Hindenburg Journalist is a great DAW for editing podcasts.
